J&K: 4 BSF men killed in ceasefire violation by Pakistan
Four BSF personnel were killed when Pakistani forces opened fire and launched mortar attacks across the border near the famous Chamliyal shrine in Ramgarh sub-sector of Samba district, J&K, late yesterday. Three others were injured too. Jammu Frontier Inspector General of the BSF, Ram Awtar, said Indian forces had retaliated strongly. "Other action is in the pipeline," he added.
Pakistan opened fire on rescue team too
According to BSF officials, Pakistan Rangers opened fire when a patrol team arrived near the border at around 9.45pm. As the forces sent in a rescue team to evacuate the personnel, Pakistan then fired mortars on the rescuers. The deceased have been identified as Assistant Commandant Jitender Singh, SI Rajneesh, ASI Ramniwas and Constable Hansraj. All were members of the BSF's 62 battalion that manned Chamliyal.
19 killed in Pakistani firing in less than a month
This comes not even a week after Brigadier Amjad Hussain, on behalf of Chenab Rangers, promised to refrain from cross-border firing under the November 2003 Indo-Pak ceasefire agreement. Earlier, Pakistan DGMO had urged his Indian counterpart to stop retaliatory firing by the BSF, HT reports, and to restore peace in the region. Since mid-May, 19 people have been killed in firing by Pakistan.
