    What's the story

    Zalmay Khalilzad, the highest ranking Muslim American in the history of United States said that US should use 'total isolation policy' towards Pakistan.

    He added that Pakistan could become next North Korea if Pakistan did not 'stop sponsoring radicalism and extremism.'

    He also said that Pakistan is playing double game with US by showing its help to fight and stabilize terrorism in Afghanistan.

    Soon after independence in 1947, United States became one of the first nations to establish relations with Pakistan.

    During Cold War era against USSR, Pakistan allied itself with the U.S.

    U.S. is Pakistan's second largest military equipment supplier after China.

    Soft drink companies like Coca Cola and Pepsi chose Pakistan for their business rather than India. Coca Cola started its business in Pakistan in 1953 while Pepsi came to Pakistan in 1979, much before both the giants came to Indian market.

    The bad patch starts

    Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif conduted Nuclear test in Baluchistan to retaliate similar test conducted by India. President Clinton, furious after the tests imposed suspension on aid, development assistance, loans from world banks on Pakistan. However, the U.S. lifted the suspension within few months.

    After the attacks on World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001, America started accusing Pakistan of harbouring members of Afghan Taliban.

    To counter Pakistan-US, India cultivated strategic and military relations with Soviet Union.

    The condition worsen after Nixon's administration supported Pakistan during the 1971 war of India-Pakistan.

    After the dissolution of Soviet Union in 1992, India's foreign policy adapted to unipolar world and adapted closer ties with the United States.

    Later, bi-lateral ties improved with cooperation on global security matters, World Bank and other matters.
