Why are onion prices surging in Delhi
Onion prices in Delhi have surged by ₹20 per kilogram at retail outlets, while wholesale rates have increased by ₹10 per kilogram. Onions were priced between ₹40 and ₹45 per kilogram at Azadpur Sabzi Mandi on Monday, but the cost has now reached ₹70 per kilogram. This price hike is attributed to recent heavy rainfall in Maharashtra, which has disrupted supply chains.
Rainfall in Maharashtra disrupts onion supply chains
An onion trader from Azadpur Mandi explained that continuous rainfall in Maharashtra has led to road blockages, affecting the transportation and arrival of onions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Maharashtra on Tuesday including Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Pune, and Satara. This warning signals potential further impacts on onion supply and prices due to weather conditions.
Onion prices expected to rise until new crop arrives
Anil Malhotra, the General Secretary of the Vegetable Traders Association, told Jagran that onion prices may continue to rise until a new crop reaches the market. This suggests that consumers may have to bear with high onion prices for some time. The exact duration of this price surge will depend on weather conditions and their impact on agricultural activities in Maharashtra and other onion-producing regions.
