Odisha: Wild jumbo tramples 5 to death in one night
Five people, including a woman and two girls, were killed when a wild elephant strayed into human habitation in different villages of Angul district, officials said today. The tusker entered Sandha village near Talcher, Odisha, from a forest late yesterday night and trampled to death three members of a family, who were sleeping in the verandah of their house. The jumbo killed four people of the same village
A man, his two-year-old daughter, and his cousin were among those killed in the first incident. Their family was staying in Sandha village since the man was working in a brick kiln in the locality. Apart from them, a woman was also killed by the jumbo in the same village while she was asleep in the verandah of her house.
Angry residents staged road blockade demanding adequate compensation
The tusker then proceeded to Santhapada village in the same district where it crushed to death a 70-year-old man, the official said. Angry over the incidents, residents of the two villages staged a road blockade today morning demanding adequate compensation to the family of the deceased. The blockade was lifted after financial assistance was provided to the families of the deceased, he said.
Forest officials trying to send wild jumbo back to jungle
The forest officials provided Rs. 40,000 as immediate-assistance for the family of the deceased man of the Sandha village and assured to provide them ex-gratia of Rs. 3,60,000 later. The officials said that efforts are on to drive away the jumbo into deep jungle.
