Odisha: Police inspector suspended for brutally thrashing 75-year-old woman
The inspector-in-charge (IIC) of a police station in Odisha's Puri district was placed under suspension for allegedly thrashing an elderly woman. Director General of Police RP Sharma said Mrutunjay Swain, IIC Nimapara police station, was placed under suspension for his gross misconduct. He also said Swain assaulted "75-year-old woman Basanti Palata and her daughter-in-law... which is unbecoming of a police officer."

Swain, however, denied the allegations leveled against him. Meanwhile, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) asked the IGP (Central Range) to furnish a report within two weeks on alleged thrashing of the elderly woman. The OHRC's acting chairperson Justice BK Mishra gave this direction while taking cognizance of the allegations made by one Prasanna Dash, Advocate-President, Sachetan Nagarik Manch of Tiadi Sahi, Puri.
