Odisha announces 1-day menstrual leave for women employees
The Odisha government has announced a one-day menstrual leave policy for women employees in both state government and private sector establishments. The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida during the district-level Independence Day celebrations in Cuttack. The policy, which is effective immediately, allows women to take leave on either the first or second day of their menstrual cycle.
Odisha's move in line with national conversation on menstrual leaves
Odisha's decision is in line with the ongoing national conversation around menstrual leave policies. The Right of Women to Menstrual Leave and Free Access to Menstrual Health Products Bill, 2022, proposes three days of paid leave for women and transwomen during menstruation. However, it is yet to be enacted. The Supreme Court also recently urged the central government to formulate a model policy on menstrual leave for women employees.
Other states and private companies with menstrual leave policies
Currently, Bihar and Kerala are the only other states that have such leave policies. Bihar introduced its policy in 1992, allowing women two days of paid menstrual leave each month. In 2023, Kerala extended menstrual leave to female students in all universities and institutions, along with up to 60 days of maternity leave. Several private companies have also introduced menstrual leave policies. Zomato has been offering 10 days of paid period leave annually to its employees since 2020.
