Bihar: Nurse fends off gang-rape attempt, cuts doctor's genitals
A month after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata triggered nationwide protests, a nurse at a private hospital in Bihar has reportedly been targeted in a gang-rape attempt. According to the police, one of the attackers, who is also the hospital's administrator, was a doctor. The nurse managed to escape by using a blade to injure the assailant's private parts. The incident occurred at the RBS Health Care Centre in Gangapur, Samastipur district on Wednesday night.
Nurse escapes after injuring doctor during assault
The nurse was finishing her shift at a physiotherapy clinic within the hospital when Dr Sanjay Kumar, the hospital administrator, and his two associates attempted to rape her, reports said. The three men were reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident. The nurse managed to free herself by slashing at Dr. Kumar's genitals with a blade, locking them in from outside before fleeing and alerting police.
3 people arrested
Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Pandey said a team was immediately dispatched to the hospital following her call. After ensuring her safety, three people were arrested including Dr Kumar and his associates, identified as Sunil Kumar Gupta and Awadhesh Kumar. The police have also recovered evidence from the scene including half a bottle of liquor, the blade used by the nurse, blood-stained clothes and three cellphones.
Suspects face additional charges under prohibition laws
Pandey disclosed that the men had locked the hospital from inside and disabled CCTV cameras before attempting to sexually assault the nurse. "The presence of mind and courage shown by the survivor is praiseworthy," he said. The suspects are currently being interrogated while Dr Kumar receives medical treatment in police custody. Additionally, they will face charges under prohibition laws as they had been drinking prior to the assault, which is illegal in Bihar, a dry state.
