Amid Kolkata rape-murder horror, another nurse molested at Bengal hospital
A man was arrested on Saturday in Birbhum district, West Bengal, for allegedly molesting a nurse while she was on duty at a government-run hospital. The incident occurred as the nurse was administering a saline drip to the accused, who had been admitted due to a high fever. The nurse reported that the patient touched her inappropriately and used offensive language during her attendance.
Nurse's complaint leads to immediate arrest
Upon receiving the nurse's complaint, hospital authorities promptly alerted the police. The accused was arrested on site and a formal written complaint was lodged with the Ilambazar Police Station. The nurse recounted, "A male patient was brought in during the night shift with a fever complaint. He touched me and used foul language." "He touched me and used foul language. We feel unsafe working here due to the lack of proper security. How could a patient act this way?"
Doctor corroborates nurse's account of incident
According to India Today, Dr. Masidul Hasan, who was on duty during the incident, corroborated the nurse's account. He stated, "Around 8.30pm a patient named Abbas Uddin arrived from Chotochak village with a fever. When the nurse went to administer the saline, the patient behaved violently and molested her." Despite requests for cooperation from Uddin's family, his inappropriate behavior continued. "We have reported the incident to the police...If no action is taken, we will consider a cease work," he said.
Recent incident echoes past tragedy at RG Kar Hospital
This incident follows closely on the heels of a tragic event at the government-run RG Kar hospital in Kolkata, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered. A civic volunteer attached to the state police, Sanjay Roy, was arrested in connection with the crime. The handling of this case by the Kolkata Police and hospital administration drew widespread criticism over laspes. The case was later handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court.
