What's the story

Following the September 26, 2018 Supreme court verdict relating to Aadhaar authentication, the government has revamped the digital KYC norms. According to new rules, Aadhaar is not mandatory for getting a new SIM card connection. The government has directed telecom companies to implement this change and start accepting alternative documents. Here's more on this.

New rules

Buyers will have to undergo digital verification

As per the new norms, buyers seeking new SIM connection will have to undergo a digital verification process. All telecom companies are required to provide a licensed version of their app to the registered shops. On the app, the customers would need to enter their username and password. They will also be required to submit proof of permanent address proof at the retail store.

Information

What you will need

The retail owner will take a picture of the customer, and other details such as location, date, day, time etc. and upload digitally on the app specified by the telecom company.

Aadhaar status

Clearing the air around Aadhaar status

Post the September 26, 2018 SC verdict relating to authentication of Aadhaar, there has been much confusion with respect to services where Aadhaar is necessary and where not. Aadhaar is no longer mandatory for services such as bank account, telecom services, and school admissions/entrance tests. However, it is still necessary for getting a PAN, filing I-T returns, and availing government welfare schemes.
