Noida resident arrested for spreading deepfake video of Yogi Adityanath
A resident of Noida has been arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police for allegedly circulating an AI-generated "deepfake" video featuring Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The arrest was confirmed by Amitabh Yash, additional director general of police (UP STF), who stated that the video was manipulated to disseminate false information and bolster anti-national sentiments.

The "deepfake" video, which surfaced on May 1, quickly gained traction online. According to ADGP Yash, the video was posted from a certain handle on platform X and was used to spread misleading facts. Following the incident, an FIR was lodged under specific sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the Information Technology Act at the Noida Cyber Crime police station. The accused, Shyam Kishor Gupta, was taken into custody on Thursday.

The video surfaced amid the ongoing deepfake case involving another Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Amit Shah. The doctored video, which was widely shared on multiple social media platforms, shows Shah addressing a rally in Telangana and stating that if the BJP forms government, the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Class reservations will be removed. The Mumbai West cyber police department filed an FIR on Monday in connection with the purported deepfake video.
