Despite SC directive, no Padmaavat screening in Gujarat
Gujarat's multiplex owners have decided not to screen Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Padmaavat as they face threats from fringe groups like Karni Sena, that could lead to loss of property and business. "Everyone is scared, No multiplex wants to bear the loss," said Rakesh Patel, director of Gujarat Multiplex Association. This decision comes despite the Supreme Court's directive to ensure its screening.
Gujarat Multiplex Association's director on threats
"We had a meeting with the police who asked us to provide us details on our security requirement...but the number of protesting groups increased to 10. All of them have been making frequent visits...warning us of consequences of releasing the film," said Patel.
Supreme Court revokes the Padmaavat ban by four states
Supreme Court of India had revoked the ban on release of Padmaavat movie, imposed by four states- Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, calling it illegal. Stating that CBFC was the only statutory body to take a decision to ban the movie, the apex court had directed these state governments to ensure the film's screening and provide security to cinema halls.
Karni Sena's latest threats
Karni Sena and others have formed an umbrella of Gujarat Kshatriya Samaj, which warned against the release of Padmaavat. These fringe groups have allegedly resorted to violence by blocking highways and burning tyres in Bhavnagar, Surendranagar, and Banaskantha districts of the state. Karni Sena also called out to people to lay curfews at theatres across the country to stop the film's screening.
Not a first in Gujarat
This is not the first time that the multiplex owners have refused to screen controversial films. In the past, it happened with Aamir Khan starrer Fanaa, following the actor's remarks over Narmada Bachao Andolan, and Naseeruddin Shah's Parzania.
