NIRF Ranking 2024: IIT-Madras bags top spot in overall category
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings for 2024 were announced on Monday by the Minister of State for Education and External Affairs, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh. This year, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras, has secured the top position in both the overall and engineering categories. Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, has topped the universities category.
IISc Bangalore also second in 'overall' category
In the universities category, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia followed IISc in second and third places respectively. IISc, Bangalore also secured the second position in the "overall" category. Notably, the ninth edition of the NIRF Rankings saw participation from 10,885 institutes, marking a 200% increase since its inception in 2016. The rankings are available on the official NIRF website at nirfindia.org.
Top ranked insitutes in other fields
Here's the top ranked institute in other fields. Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad leads in management. Jamia Hamdard ranks first in pharmacy, while Hindu College in New Delhi is the top college overall. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, is the leading medical college, and National Law School of India University in Bengaluru ranks first in law. These rankings emphasize the premier status of these institutions in their respective domains.
NIRF Rankings 2024 introduces new categories
This year's NIRF rankings have introduced three new categories: Open Universities, Skill Universities, and State Public Universities (state-funded government universities). These are in addition to last year's categories which included Overall, Colleges, Universities, and Research Institutions. The subject domains now include Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, Architecture and Planning, Dental, and a new addition—Agriculture and Allied Sectors.
Changes made to two criteria this year
Interestingly, changes were also made to two criteria this year. For medical colleges, the faculty vs student ratio was revised from 1:15 to 1:10. For state-funded government institutes, this ratio was changed from 1:20 to 1:15. The student-teacher ratio indicates how many students there are for each teacher in a school. While it's often linked to class size, it goes beyond that. This ratio also represents a teacher's workload and their capacity to provide attention and support to students.
'Sustainability Ranking to be launched next year'
Anil Sahasrabuddhe, Chairman of National Board of Accreditation, which prepares the NIRF rankings stated that "Considering the rising importance of carbon neutrality and sustainability, a Sustainability Ranking will also be launched next year."
