NIA conducts nationwide raids in Rameshwaram cafe blast case
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday carried out raids across multiple states as part of its ongoing investigation into the Rameshwaram Cafe blast in Bengaluru that took place on March 1. The explosion was caused by a low-intensity IED bomb and injured nine people. The raids were initiated based on information obtained from two people arrested in connection with the blast.
Arrests made in connection with Rameshwaram cafe blast
Reports said, Mussavir Hussain Shazib and Abdul Matheen Taha were identified as the planners and executors of the blast. They were arrested from a lodge near Kolkata on April 12. The NIA has not disclosed the details of the places being raided based on their interrogation. Both Shazib and Taha are known to be associated with an Islamic State module in Shivamogga, Karnataka leading to their apprehension after a 42-day chase.
Cafe blast investigation
The bomb detonated at the busy Rameshwaram Cafe, triggering a multi-agency investigation. Early investigations identified a man, later confirmed as Shazib, who left an unidentified bag near the cash counter. CCTV footage showed Shazib on a bus in Tumakuru on the day of the blast, dressed in a full-sleeved shirt, cap, facemask, and spectacles. A battery and timer recovered from the blast site indicated premeditation.
Search on for online handler 'Colonel'
According to reports, authorities are attempting to identify an elusive online handler codenamed "Colonel." It is believed that "Colonel" had been communicating with Taha, alleged to be the main planner, and Shazib, the alleged bomber. This communication took place since their association with ISIS. A case has been registered under the anti-terror law Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosives Act in relation to this incident.
