PM Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building on Sunday
PM Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inaugurated the new Parliament building, 'Naya Sansad Bhawan,' on Sunday morning. A havan was performed for the occasion. PM Modi addressed the gathering inside the Lok Sabha chamber, marking his first speech in the new complex. Alongside the ruling BJP, approximately 25 other political parties joined the inauguration ceremony.
Historic 'Sengol' scepter installed in Lok Sabha
The historical scepter - 'Sengol' was placed in the Lok Sabha chamber, next to the Speaker's chair. High priests from Tamil Nadu's adheenams and mutts handed the scepter to PM Modi, who installed it in the new building. Notably, India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, received the same 'Sengol' at his residence on August 14 as a symbol of the "transfer of power."

New Parliament complex designed to be inclusive and 'divyang-friendly'
The new Parliament complex is designed to be 'divyang-friendly' i.e. disabled-friendly and incorporates a central lounge area that complements the open courtyard, providing a space for members to interact. The Lok Sabha in the new complex accommodates 888 seats, while the Rajya Sabha has 348 seats. Furthermore, the redesigned floor plan allows for 1,272 seats in the Lok Sabha chamber to accommodate joint sessions.
