New Rs. 100 coin to be released in Vajpayee's honor
According to an official statement, a Rs. 100 coin bearing the image of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is slated to be launched soon, in honor of the late BJP stalwart. The coin will weigh 35grams, and is the latest in a series of gestures being made to pay homage. Vajpayee passed away on August 16 this year. Here's more.
Vajpayee had been India's Prime Minister thrice
Atal Bihari Vajpayee had served three terms as the Prime Minister of India. First, he served a 13-day term in 1996. Then, he served for 18 months from 1998 to 1999. Finally, he served a full five-year term from 1999 to 2004.
What we know about the coin
One side of the coin will bear Vajpayee's portrait, and will carry an inscription of his full name in English and in the Devanagari script. The years 1924 and 2018 will be inscribed at the bottom to mark his birth and death years. The other side will bear the Lion Capital of Ashoka, and Satyameva Jayate will be inscribed below in Devanagari script.
Several places, including four Himalayan peaks, have been renamed
Since Vajpayee passed away this year at the age of 93, several gestures have been made to commemorate him. Various places have been renamed in his honor, including four Himalayan peaks. Chhattisgarh's Naya Raipur has also been renamed to 'Atal Nagar', while Lucknow's famous Hazratganj Chauraha will be renamed to 'Atal Chowk'. There are also plans to rename the Dehradun airport to commemorate him.
