NE monsoon hits parts of South, to expand in 24hrs
The northeast monsoon has set in over parts of South India from today and would expand in the next 24 hours, regional weather office said. This time, there could be excess rainfall, pointed out S Balachandran, Director of Area Cyclone Warning Center. "Northeast monsoon rains have commenced over coastal and southern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, southern Kerala and southern coastal-areas of Andhra Pradesh," he said.
Monsoon to cover remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala tomorrow
The monsoon will cover the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Rayalaseema and southern Karnataka tomorrow, Balachandran said. TN is dependent on this crucial monsoon cycle as it brings the bulk of the annual rainfall to the state. According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the long period average rainfall for Tamil Nadu during the northeast monsoon, stretching between October and December, was 44 cm.
Heavy rains predicted in coastal districts of TN
The IMD further said that the forecast was for an "above normal" monsoon and that "there are still two months left". Balachandran predicted showers in most parts of the state and Puducherry on November 2 and 3, while heavy rain was likely in one or two places in coastal districts. In the last 24hrs in TN, Puzhal recorded 11cm rainfall while Kelambakkam recorded 10cm.
