Bihar Social-Welfare-Minister should be sacked for Muzaffarpur shelter-home-scandal: NCP's Anwar
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) National General Secretary and MP, Tariq Anwar, demanded that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sack his Social Welfare Minister, Manju Verma, for the failure to prevent sexual exploitation at the state-funded shelter home at Muzaffarpur. He also demanded the arrest of the Minister's husband and said that he should be tried for his involvement in the scandal. Here's more.
Anwar attacks CM Nitish over the sexual abuse case
MP Tariq Anwar said that both the Bihar government and CM Nitish Kumar are responsible for the shameful sexual abuse incident that had been going on for years. "Nitish Kumar should immediately sack social welfare minister Manju Verma for her department's failure to prevent sexual exploitation at the government-funded shelter home for girls at Muzaffarpur," the NCP leader said.
Manju Verma's husband allegedly used to visit shelter home
Minister Manju Verma's husband, Chandrashekhar, allegedly used to visit the Muzaffarpur shelter home. Chandrashekhar, however, claimed he had accompanied his wife to the shelter home only once. Anwar said the incident brought disrepute to the Bihar government, which failed to protect the girls at the shelter home. "It (state govt) was instead much more interested in patronizing misdeeds of the culprits," he alleged.
Sexual exploitation of girls first highlighted in TISS report
A social audit report submitted by Mumbai's Tata Institute of Social Science to Bihar's Social Welfare Department in April first highlighted the sexual exploitation of minors at the Muzaffarpur shelter home, Anwar said. It was "quite surprising" that no official did their job honestly and such an incident continued with "the connivance of officials and other important persons sitting in the government," he remarked.
NCP to protest against central government's functioning
The NCP, Anwar said, would observe "Samvidhan Bachao, Desh Bachao" programme on August 9 to protest against the Center's functioning. He is a Lok Sabha member from Bihar's Katihar constituency.
