Nagpur woman delivers own baby as hospital staff sleeps on
In a horrible incident of negligence by officials, a 23-year-old woman had to deliver her own child with no medical assistance at a government hospital on Monday. The incident occurred at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Nagpur when the woman started experiencing labor pains past midnight, however, no medical officials responded to her cries. Here's what went down.
None of the hospital staffers heard her cries
The woman, identified as Sukeshni Shrikant Chatare, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday as her due date was approaching, Hindustan Times reports. Reportedly, Chatare, a resident of Hudkeshwar in south Nagpur, was alone in the delivery ward past midnight when she started experiencing labor pains. Writhing in pain, she screamed, but apparently none of the hospital staffers heard her.
Another patient's relative told her she had started crowning
Reportedly, Chatare's cries awoke a relative of another patient who then saw that she was crowning. They told her to pull the baby out. Initially, Chatare refused, but as the contractions continued, she managed to pull the baby out, her relatives said.
Chatare wasn't given a bed until family complained
Chatare was ill-treated by hospital staffers ever since she was admitted on Saturday, HT reported. Initially, she wasn't given a bed and was made to lie on the floor. Only upon her relatives' complaint was she moved to a bed in the hospital's gynecology ward. Chatare had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since the beginning of her pregnancy (this was her first).
After delivery, woman forced to sleep on floor with newborn
After the birth, Chatare's mother arrived and woke up the nurses, who then cut the umbilical cord. The nurses then told her to sleep on the floor with the newborn. The mother and child were found sleeping on the floor on Monday morning.
Husband lodged a complaint with hospital administration
Once again, Chatare's relatives complained to the head of gynecology to get her a bed after she spent four hours on the floor with the newborn. Her husband, Shrikant was frustrated with the hospital's "casual approach," and told HT, "I have lodged a formal complaint with the medical administration in this regard." Hospital authorities have now initiated a formal inquiry following the complaint.
Three-member committee set up to probe matter
"We have set up a three-member committee to probe and told them to submit the report as soon as possible," the acting dean of medical college, NG Tirpude, told the publication, deeming the incident "unfortunate." He assured appropriate action against the people concerned. Medical education minister Girish Mahajan also issued a notification ordering action against the hospital, Free Press Journal reported.
