1st all-women managed polling station set up in Nagaland
The Northern Angami constituency in Nagaland transformed a government middle school into the state's first polling station, managed entirely by women officers. This initiative was launched during the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 on Friday. Kumar Ramnikant, Kohima district's administrative head, led this initiative to challenge societal norms and promote equal participation in governance.
Ramnikant advocates for equal contribution in governance
Ramnikant emphasized the importance of inclusivity across all societal strata for the proper development of the country. He stated, "If our country needs proper development, there should be an equal contribution from both halves." The women officers were chosen based on their commitment and proficiency, ensuring smooth operations throughout the day at the polling station.
Women officers praised for systematic approach
Zhoto Khamo, a seasoned officer, praised her female colleagues' meticulousness, stating that "Women are more systematic. They take every sentence seriously whereas men have an easy attitude." Despite a minor issue with a faulty voting machine, calm and order prevailed at the Chedema village polling station. Voters patiently lined up to cast their votes, acknowledging the significance of this historic moment. The first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 spanned 102 constituencies across 21 states and union territories.
