Triple talaq: Muslim Board opposes amendments to law
Ahead of a Supreme Court hearing on the legality of triple talaq, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has opposed any changes to the law in its submission to the Law Commission. "We are fully satisfied with the commands of Islamic laws, especially on Islamic orders related to nikah (marriage), talaq (divorce), fasakh (annulment) and virasat (inheritance)," its one-page pro forma states.

"The Constitution of India has provided complete freedom for followers of all faiths to practice their religion. We, therefore, do not accept uniform civil code in any form," the document adds. It has already reportedly garnered support from four crore Muslims.
AIMPLB's arguments in favour of triple talaq
In one of their several arguments supporting triple talaq, AIMPLB said if it is discontinued, a man might instead murder his wife. Accusations of loose character during divorce proceedings could damage a woman's chances of re-marriage. Moreover, 3.5cr Indian Muslim women support it, AIMPLB said. If triple talaq was abolished, it would amount to re-writing of the Quran, it argued.
Law Commission examining status
In a meeting with the Law Commission in April, the AIMPLB had strongly opposed any amendment to the laws, and the implementation of a uniform code. Law Commission Chairman, Retd SC Judge BS Chauhan, had sought to quell apprehensions; he said the Commission was still seeking opinions. It is currently examining suggestions on the uniform civil code and triple talaq.
SC to begin triple talaq hearing on May 11
The SC has referred the triple talaq case to a five-judge bench and has posted it for hearing on May 11. The bench will rule on the constitutional validity of triple-talaq, polygamy and nikah halala in reference to Muslim personal laws and secularism in India.
