'Extremely heavy rains' likely in Mumbai through the weekend
Relief isn't likely for rain-lashed Mumbai in the near future. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the city will get 'extremely heavy rain' through the weekend, expected to last till Monday. "People are advised to abstain from outdoor activities as much as possible during the period and watch for weather updates," it said. Yesterday, life in Mumbai was disrupted after rains resulted in heavy waterlogging.
More about the IMD's warning
According to IMD, rainfall above 115.6mm up to 204.4mm during a 24-hour period translates to "extremely heavy rain." "Widespread rainfall activity is likely to continue till June 10. It is very likely to extend to north coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, from Friday. Extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in these regions is also very likely during this period," the warning read.
Here's what BMC is doing to deal with it
The BMC has taken several measures to deal with the situation. Schools will be kept open at all times to serve as shelters in case of flooding, it said. Navy teams will be kept on standby in vulnerable areas. NDRF teams with relief material have been deployed at Parel, Mankhurd and Andheri Sports Complex. It has also cancelled leaves of senior officials this weekend.
Mumbai life disrupted by rains even before monsoon hits
Yesterday was the first time this season that Mumbai was pounded by heavy rains, although intermittently. Life was thrown out of gear. Train services and traffic slowed down, and at least one flight was disrupted. Several parts of the city, including Elphinstone Road, Dadar TT Circle, Parel and Hindmata were flooded. Incidentally, these were just pre-Monsoon showers. Monsoon is yet to hit.
The 2017 floods crippled Mumbai for days
Last year, Mumbai was crippled after torrential rains in August. At least 20 people had died. BMC faced much flak. However, in a report, it blamed IMD, the traffic department and Central Railways for the crisis, giving itself a clean chit.
Follow these suggestions to stay safe during rains
The prime task to do during heavy rains is to stay indoors as much as possible. Unplug all appliances not in use. If you stay near the sea, it is better to temporarily move to a friend or relative's place somewhere on the inner side. Don't consume fruit and vegetables exposed to rainwater. Avoid areas with open drains/manholes and electricity poles.
