Mumbai: 36 flamingos killed after Emirates flight hits them
An Emirates flight EK508 struck a flock of flamingos over the Laxmi Nagar area of Pantnagar, in Mumbai's Ghatkopar on Monday. The collision resulted in the death of at least 36 birds. The incident was reported by the flight crew upon their arrival at Mumbai airport at 9:18pm. Despite damages, the aircraft managed to land safely and is currently grounded for examination by engineers.
Flamingo casualties discovered, search initiated
Forest officials discovered the bodies of the flamingos near Mumbai's Ghatkopar and have initiated a search for more potential casualties. "36 bodies of flamingos were found in this area and a search has been launched to find out if more flamingos are killed," stated SY Rama Rao, additional chief conservator of forests for the Mangrove Protection Cell.
Environmentalists investigate cause of bird strike
The incident is believed to have occurred between 8:40pm and 8:50pm, with forest officers arriving on scene by 9:15pm. Environmentalists are now investigating what caused the birds to fly into the airplane. D Stalin from NGO Vanashakti suggested that new power lines through the sanctuary area could be causing disorientation to the birds, potentially contributing to this accident.
