'Shocked...worried': Mumbai studio closes after vandalism over Kunal Kamra's jokes
What's the story
Mumbai's famous stand-up comedy venue, Habitat Studio, has announced a temporary shutdown after Shiv Sena workers vandalized the venue.
The attack was reportedly provoked by comedian Kunal Kamra's jokes at Eknath Shinde, Maharashtra Deputy CM and a prominent Shiv Sena leader.
Following the attack, Habitat Studio released an official statement on Instagram expressing shock and concern over the acts of vandalism by Shiv Sena workers.
Response
Studio's statement on vandalism and future plans
In a statement, Habitat Studio said, "We are shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us."
It added that artists are responsible for their views and creative choices.
They also said they have never interfered with any artist's content but are re-evaluating their approach.
"The recent events have made us rethink about how we get blamed and targeted every time almost like we are a proxy for the performer," it said.
Free speech
Habitat Studio's commitment to free expression
The studio added, "We are shutting down until we figure out the best way to provide a platform for free expression without putting ourselves and our property in jeopardy."
They encouraged artists, audiences, and stakeholders to speak out freely.
The studio acknowledged the importance of balancing free expression with safety and security.
Legal action
FIR filed against Shiv Sena workers for vandalism
An FIR has been filed against Shiv Sena Yuva Sena General Secretary Rahool Kanal and 19 others for their involvement in the ransacking of Habitat Studio.
During a performance, Kamra sarcastically referred to Shinde as a "traitor" (gaddar) while parodying a popular number from the film Dil To Pagal Hai.
Habitat Studio was the same venue for the 'India's Got Latent' episode, featuring Ranveer Ahllabadia and Samay Raina that recently sparked a big controversy over a vulgar joke involving parents.
Controversy
Shiv Sena MLA files FIR against Kamra
Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Murji Patel has lodged an FIR against Kamra for his remarks on Shinde.
Patel gave a two-day ultimatum for an apology from Kamra. He threatened to limit his movement in Mumbai and vows to take it up in the assembly if action isn't taken.
"We have demanded quick action against him," Patel said, warning Shiv Sainiks won't let him move freely in Mumbai.
