Mumbai, Thane to experience heatwave; mercury to touch 38°C
What's the story
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Mumbai, Thane, and the Konkan region of Maharashtra on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The temperatures in these regions are likely to reach between 37°C and 38°C—about five degrees above the usual February weather conditions.
IMD scientist Sushma Nair confirmed that these high temperatures are likely to continue for two days.
Record heat
Mumbai records highest February temperature in 5 years
Mumbai recorded a maximum temperature of 38.4°C in February, the highest temperature in five years for the month.
The last time such high temperatures were observed in February was on February 28, 2020.
The all-time highest recorded February temperature at Santacruz Observatory was 39.6°C on February 25, 1966.
Weather warning
IMD issues 'yellow warning' for Mumbai, neighboring districts
The IMD has issued a "yellow warning" for the heatwave sweeping Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts.
The heat is due to delayed sea breezes and strong easterly winds, with an anticyclone at mid-level preventing air from rising.
The IMD's daily bulletin observed that maximum temperatures across India were markedly above normal by over five degrees Celsius on Monday.
Widespread heat
Heatwave conditions extend beyond Mumbai
Along with Mumbai and its adjoining districts, hot and humid conditions are also likely in isolated pockets of Saurashtra, Kutch, and Gujarat regions.
Kannur Airport in Kerala recorded India's highest maximum temperature of 40.4°C on Monday, February 24.
The IMD's forecast offers no immediate respite from the heat for Mumbai and adjoining areas, with day temperatures likely to hover around 37°C.
