MP cops being probed for tonsuring men celebrating cricket win
What's the story
Madhya Pradesh police are under the scanner after they purportedly punished a bunch of cricket fans.
The latter were celebrating the Indian Cricket Team's Champions Trophy victory on March 9.
Viral videos from Dewas show nine youths being paraded with their heads shaved after being arrested for allegedly causing a commotion and clashing with police personnel during the celebrations.
Dual probe
Investigation launched into police actions
Dewas Superintendent of Police (SP) Punit Gehlot confirmed an investigation has been launched into the conduct of the police as well as the fans.
"The probe will examine all aspects, including whether those detained were actually involved," Gehlot said.
Additional SP Jaiveer Singh Bhadoria has been tasked with a time-bound inquiry, which is expected to be done within seven days.
Public outcry
BJP MLA condemns police actions
BJP MLA Gayatri Raje Puar met Gehlot to discuss the punishment meted out to the fans.
Puar condemned the actions, saying, "These young men were celebrating India's victory just like the rest of the country."
She added they are not habitual offenders, and their public humiliation is completely unjustified.
SP has assured a thorough inquiry into this matter after her meeting.
Legal action
NSA invoked against 2 fans
Two of the men have been booked under the National Security Act (NSA) after the event turned violent, and they allegedly attacked the police.
The NSA allows detention without trial for up to 12 months.
According to reports, chaos ensued when police officers led by station in-charge Ajay Singh Gurjar tried to stop some people from recklessly blowing crackers at Sayaji Gate.
Video footage showed some youths misbehaving with officers, even chasing a police vehicle and throwing stones at it.
