Odisha: Motor Vehicle Inspector arrested for possessing disproportionate assets
A junior Motor Vehicle Inspector has been arrested by Anti-graft vigilance wing in Bhadrak district of Odisha for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. Shankar Narayan Choudhury was arrested from the RTO office in Bhadrak yesterday after search operations carried out in his office room and houses showed that he had amassed huge properties beyond his known income sources.
Choudhury found with assets worth Rs. 1.76 crore
The raids were carried out on Wednesday in a building owned by Choudhury in Bhubaneswar, another in Cuttack, office-room at Bhadrak, rented house at Bhadrak and houses of his two relatives at Burla and Bhubaneswar. Choudhury was found to have assets worth Rs. 1.76cr including buildings in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, seven homestead-plots in Bhubaneswar, Rs. 13,03,000 cash, a car, bank deposits, among other articles.
Choudhury, spouse couldn't account for possession worth Rs. 1.29cr
The amount of total assets might increase after investigations are completed, a vigilance official said. During examination, Choudhury and his spouse could not account for the possession of disproportionate assets worth Rs. 1.29 crore, following which a case was registered against them under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 as amended by the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act 2018, he said.
Choudhury to remain in jail custody till November 28
The raids were carried out on the basis of search warrants issued by a special court, informed the vigilance official. Choudhury was arrested and forwarded to the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance in Bhubaneswar and remanded to jail custody till November 28.
