Monsoon showers to hit Maharashtra, Goa; possible flooding in Kerala
Monsoon is likely to hit Maharashtra and Goa in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said today. Rains in Mumbai are likely to peak between June 8 and 10, private agency Skymet has said. However, the government said as monsoon is strengthening, and also warned of "possible flooding" from June 10 onwards in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Konkan belt, and Goa.
Conditions seem favorable in Bay of Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh
Monsoon, which made an onset in Kerala on May 29, three days before its scheduled arrival, advanced in parts of Tamil Nadu, and southwest, west-central, east-central, northeast of Bay of Bengal, and in most northeastern states, the IMD said. "Conditions are likely to become favorable for further advance of southwest monsoon into Bay of Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh,... Tripura and Meghalaya," it added.
Cyclonic circulation over Konkan and Goa; warnings to stay indoors
A cyclonic circulation is forming over Konkan and Goa, and it will gradually move north along the Maharashtra coast, Mahesh Palawat, Vice-President, Skymet, said. "Mumbai, Dahanu, Thane, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg could witness heavy to very heavy rains from June 6-10. From June 10-11, Surat, Valsad, and adjoining districts of south Gujarat will also receive heavy to very rains," Palwat said.
3 dead in pre-monsoon showers in Mumbai
"Sustained heavy raining coming for a week starting on the 6th of June. (June) 8/9/10 can be extremely heavy. Warnings should be issued now. Just stay indoors," Skymet CEO Jatin Singh tweeted. On Saturday, three people, died due to electrocution as pre-monsoon showers hit Mumbai.
