Modi govt attempted to stall NRC, says Congress spokesperson
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera on Sunday alleged that the Narendra Modi government had itself tried to stall the Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC) process by appealing to the Supreme Court in 2017 that such a move could lead to law and order issues. "I will tell you how they hatched a conspiracy to stop, delay, and disrupt the NRC process," said Khera.
SC lashed out at central govt for dragging the matter
Congress's came a day after it staked ownership of NRC exercise by calling it "a baby of Congress party," born as a consequence of Assam Accord signed by former PM Rajiv Gandhi in 1985. "On November 30, 2017, SC had lashed out at Attorney General and criticized the government's 'sheer inaction' and dragging the matter for more than three years," Khera said.

"We do not see that the draft NRC could result in a law and order situation," Khera said. Khera demanded to know what was the stand of the government, which on one hand seeks to grant citizenship rights to those who migrated to India before 31 Dec'14 through the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill (2016), while on the other, is playing politics with NRC.
