Pollachi: Girl, who went missing, found dead with slit throat
A 19-year-old girl, who had gone missing two days ago in Pollachi of Tamil Nadu, was found dead on Saturday with a slit throat. Locals of Poosarippatti village discovered the girl's body on a riverbed and informed the police. Her parents had lodged a complaint after she went missing on Friday. Police haven't ruled out the possibility of sexual abuse. Here's what happened.
The girl was engaged and due to get married soon
Reportedly, the victim belonged to a village of Dindigul district. She was pursuing B.Sc in Mathematics from the Coimbatore city college. The girl was engaged to a relative and due to get married on June 13. On Friday afternoon, her mother called her home to buy wedding sarees, and the girl left her hostel. She was supposed to board a bus from Gandhipuram.
Police called family to identify semi-nude body of girl
A police official said the girl's phone was switched off prompting her parents to launch a search operation. Around the same time, rural police found the body of a semi-nude girl in Poosarippatti village. The family members were called to the scene and they identified the body. The victim's body, which was sent to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for an autopsy, had several stab wounds.
Police suspect the girl was followed when she left hostel
The girl may have been followed by two youths when she left her hostel. Police are collecting CCTV footage from Pollachi, Anaimalai, Ambarampalayam, Gomangalam, Palladam, and Coimbatore city. "We are investigating the case to identify whether it is a rape and murder case or just a murder over one-side love as the girl's parent engaged her for marriage," an official said. Four teams have been formed.
Pollachi is still grappling from sex abuse scandal
This case comes close on the heels of Pollachi sex abuse scandal, which rocked the area. A gang of men allegedly sexually abused over 50 women and blackmailed them. The men lured the victims through social media and assaulted them after winning their confidence. The abuse caught attention when one victim mustered the courage to speak up. Four men have been arrested so far.
