Mercedes, BMW allegedly racing on sea link crash into cab
Two luxury cars—a Mercedes and a BMW—were involved in a high-speed accident on the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai on Sunday. The incident occurred when the two vehicles, reportedly racing each other, lost control and collided with a Wagon R app-based cab from behind. The impact caused the cab to overturn and spin around thrice before being dragged from the fourth lane to the first.
Cab occupants and drivers' condition post-accident
The cab was carrying a family of four, including a 10-year-old child. Despite the severity of the accident, no serious injuries were reported. The family was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Meanwhile, the drivers of the luxury cars—Tariq Chaudhary and Sehbaz Khan—were arrested on charges of attempted culpable homicide and rash driving. They were also taken to JJ Hospital for medical examinations to determine if they were under the influence of alcohol.
Cab driver files complaint, drivers arrested
The cab driver, Nisar Ahmed (26), filed a complaint against the drivers of the two cars, alleging that they were trying to "race with one another." The drivers of the BMW and Mercedes—Mumbai Central resident Shahbaz Khan (31), and Kurla resident Tarique Chaudhary (29)—were subsequently arrested. They were booked for 'attempt to culpable homicide, rash driving endangering life.'
Accident scene and previous incidents on sea link
Visuals from the accident scene showed significant damage to both luxury cars. The Mercedes had a damaged bonnet, while the BMW sustained rear-end damage. Notably, this is not the first high-speed accident on the Bandra-Worli sea link. In November last year, three people lost their lives in an accident involving a speeding SUV that crashed into a Mercedes late at night and rammed several other vehicles in an attempt to escape.
