Delhi: Sangam Vihar's criminal godmother wanted for murder, kidnapping
The ringleader of one of Delhi's most notorious crime syndicates is on the run again. This time, she is wanted for murder and abduction. Delhi police is on the hunt for Basiran, the 62-year-old godmother of Sangam Vihar's crime family. Bailed only two months ago, she and her eight sons were jailed for over 100 crimes. Soon after release, Basiran took contracts for killing and extortion
Soon after she was bailed, Basiran resumed her life of crime. This time, however, to pay for the release of her sons. She took Rs. 60,000 from a Munni Begum to kill her brother. His body was eventually found in Sangam Vihar's forest area in November. In another bid, her gang tried to extort Rs. 50,000 and a new motorcycle from a young man.
Basiran started her criminal journey by selling illicit liquor
Basiran moved to Delhi from Rajasthan in 2000. She started small, by selling illicit liquor. The gang had been evading arrest until 2017, when police launched crackdown to nab them. Despite being the crime syndicate's leader, Basiran has never been charged with heinous crimes. The police are now considering to arrest her under laws that would make it tougher for her to get bailed.
Family involved in crimes ranging from extortion to murder
As of November 2017, Basiran was wanted in three bootlegging cases. Her son Shamim Gunga was involved in 38 cases, including murder and robbery. Other sons Shakeel and Vakeel in 29 cases, Rahul in 3, and Sunny, Sohil and Faisal were wanted in 17 others, police told The Asian Age. The eighth son, a minor, also a criminal, is in a correctional home.
