J&K: Hours before soldier's last rites, wife delivers daughter
Hours before Lance Naik Ranjeet Singh's last rites were completed with full state honors, his wife Shimpu Devi delivered a girl, whom she said was the daughter of the nation. Singh was one of the three soldiers killed by Pakistan's Border Action Team (BAT) in Kashmir's Rajouri district on Sunday. He was supposed to return to his village Ramban to stay with his wife.
Context: Heavily armed intruders killed Indian soldiers
On Sunday night, the heavily armed intruders of BAT ambushed Indian soldiers, killing three and seriously injuring another one, HT reports. BAT, which consists of regular Pakistani soldiers and terrorists, carries out operations across LoC to make a dent in the Indian army and paramilitary forces. Reiterating to their attacks, the Indian soldiers killed two of them, a senior officer said.
The soldiers who were martyred
The three martyred soldiers were, Havildar Kaushal Kumar of Nowshera, Lance Naik Ranjeet Singh of Doda and Rifleman Rajat Kumar Basan of Pallanwala. The one who was injured was Rifleman Rakesh Kumar of Samba.
Shimpu called her child 'nation's daughter'
On Monday night, Shimpu developed labor pains and was admitted to Ramban hospital. At 4:15 AM on Tuesday, she delivered the daughter. "The daughter I have given birth today is the nation's daughter and I wish she becomes an army officer," she said. She added the army should take care of her daughter, and provide all facilities before she joins the forces.
Shimpu bid tearful goodbye to husband amid slogans by locals
Shimpu and Singh got married in 2006. She bid a tearful goodbye to her husband at cremation ground at Seri Ghat on Chenab's bank. Singh's last rites had noises of 'Shaheed Ranjeet Amar Rahe' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. The funeral was attended by army, police, civil administration officers and local residents. The funerals of the other two soldiers took place on Monday.
