Manipur: Kuki groups add conditions for 2 Meitei hostages' release
Kuki organizations involved in negotiations with the government over two Meitei hostages have introduced new conditions for their release. These developments come amidst a 48-hour shutdown in Imphal, initiated by citizens demanding the safe return of the hostages. According to the Hindustan Times, the Kuki groups are now demanding the relocation of all Kuki prisoners from Sajiwa Central Jail in Imphal to Churachandpur.
Kuki groups demand transfer of inmates, new police station
They are also calling for the establishment of a new police station in Island Valley, Kangpokpi. These demands were made during ongoing negotiations with Manipur Police chief, who has been engaging with Kuki organizations since Monday to secure the release of two remaining hostages. Kuki militants had abducted three Meitei youths, one of whom was released a day later, last Friday.
Demands include the release of Mark T Haokip
Kuki militants initially demanded that the government release a man from their community who was being detained on secessionist charges in return for the two Meitei youths. "The demands include the release of Mark T Haokip, currently in the custody of the NIA, and the shifting of 15 Kuki prisoners from Imphal's Sajiwa jail to the Churachandpur jail," an officer, who asked not to be named, told HT.
Shutdown extends across Manipur amid hostage crisis
The Joint Action Committee, formed to secure the release of the two youths, had called for a shutdown in Thoubal district from 3am on Tuesday. However, by late Tuesday evening, they announced an extension of the bandh to encompass the entire state. This decision has led to a complete halt of normal activities with all government institutions, schools and colleges remaining closed.
Ethnic violence and drone attacks escalate tensions
The unrest in Manipur has been ongoing since May 3 last year over the Meiteis' demand to be included in the Scheduled Tribe list. The unrest had not died down since, with reports of drone attacks in September. While Kuki groups deny using drones, Manipur Police and the government have confirmed their use at Koutruk village. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is currently investigating these claims.
