Man who saved Rishabh Pant's life attempts suicide with girlfriend
What's the story
Rajat Kumar, a 25-year-old Uttar Pradesh man who shot to national fame for saving Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant's life in 2022, attempted suicide with his girlfriend on February 9.
The incident occurred in Buchha Basti, Muzaffarnagar district after their families allegedly opposed their relationship over caste differences, NDTV reported.
While Kumar is in critical condition at a hospital, his girlfriend Manu Kashyap unfortunately lost her life during treatment.
Relationship conflict
Family opposition to relationship leads to tragic incident
The families of Kumar and Kashyap had arranged other marriages for them, owing to caste differences.
According to the Times of India, a villager noticed them writhing in pain and alerted authorities, and the two were rushed to separate hospitals. However, the girl could not be saved.
After Kashyap's death, her mother has accused Kumar of kidnapping and poisoning her daughter.
The local police are now investigating these allegations.
Past heroism
Kumar's heroic act in 2022 gained national attention
Kumar first came into the limelight in December 2022 when he and another local resident, Nishu Kumar, saved Pant from a near-fatal car accident.
Pant was on his way from Delhi to Uttarakhand when his Mercedes crashed into a divider and caught fire near Roorkee.
The duo, who were working at a nearby factory, witnessed the accident and immediately rushed to help. They pulled Pant out of the burning vehicle and arranged for emergency medical assistance.
