Maharashtra: Serial rapist, accused in 13 cases, arrested
A man wanted in connection with 13 cases of rape and molestation of minor girls in Mumbai and neighboring areas of Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar district was arrested yesterday. Rehan Qureshi, a salesman in his 30s, was nabbed by Navi Mumbai Crime Branch from Mira Road area in Thane after he was identified through a CCTV footage following two crime incidents. Here's more.
Police identified Qureshi through CCTV cameras
While investigating the 13 rape cases, cops identified Qureshi through the CCTV footage of cameras installed at Mira Road railway station and also in Navi Mumbai. Prior to the identification, he allegedly violated two girls, aged 13 and 15, at Nallasopara in Palghar, an official said, adding, on getting information about Qureshi's whereabouts, the police laid a trap at Nayanagar and nabbed him.
What was the modus operandi of the accused?
Cops said his modus operandi was to approach a girl who's alone at her house and tell her that her father has called her. When the victim accompanied him believing his claims, the accused would take her to an isolated place and commit the offense, the official said. A probe was on in all the cases, Navi Mumbai DCP (Crime) Tushar Doshi said.
