Maha govt to make adulteration of milk a non-bailable offense
The Maharashtra Government has decided to come with a law that will make adulteration of milk a non-bailable offense, with a punishment of up to three years in jail. State food and civil supplies minister Girish Bapat said, if the punishment for milk adulteration was increased to three years, there will be no scope for the accused to get bail. Presently, milk adulteration is a bailable offense
Adulteration of milk is currently a bailable offense having a provision of punishment for six months. Many members in the Legislative House demanded life imprisonment for the accused in such offenses. But, the Minister cited difficulties in enacting a law with the provision of a life sentence. Bapat said currently there are four mobile vans in the state for testing the contamination of milk.
About 30% milk is adulterated in Maharashtra: Satam
Earlier, Ameet Satam (of the BJP) claimed that about 30% of the milk brought into Mumbai was adulterated. He also said surprise checks were not being conducted because of the shortage of mobile vans and the staff. The BJP member had demanded amendments to the existing laws to check the adulteration of milk, medicines, and even food in hotels.
