Shivaji memorial: Maha govt now plans shorter statue, longer sword
The Maharashtra government has changed the height specifications of the proposed Chhatrapati Shivaji Memorial off the Arabian Sea to reduce the cost of the project, an RTI has revealed. The height of Shivaji's statue has now been reduced to 75.7m from 83.2m. But, to maintain the statue's overall height of 121.2m, the length of the sword has been raised from 38m to 45.5m.
Height of pedestal reduced; will save Rs. 338.94 crore: RTI-response
These changes won't alter the total height of the statue, which would be 121.2m. The height of the entire structure, including the pedestal, would be 212m, the RTI response said. The height of the pedestal has been reduced to 87.4m from... 96.2m. This change will save Rs. 338.94cr," it added. PM Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the project in December 2016.
Larsen & Toubro will construct the Shivaji memorial
The project's contract was awarded to Larsen & Toubro for Rs. 2,500cr in March this year. The Maharashtra government had pegged the overall project cost (Phase I and II) at Rs. 3,600cr.
