Maharashtra government likely to ban plastic packaging of e-commerce products
Maharashtra government is likely to ban plastic packaging of e-commerce products as well as plastic bottles below 200ml capacity for water and beverages. Besides, the government is likely to allow the retail packaging of plastic bags above 50 microns and is contemplating bringing multilayered packaging and tetra packaging under the ambit of the plastic ban. The statewide ban came into effect from June 23.
Firms given 3 months' time for opting environment-friendly packaging
Under the extended producer's responsibility (EPR), three months' time will be given to e-commerce companies to opt for environment-friendly packaging and to multilayered packaging and tetra packaging firms to set up a mechanism for collecting/recycling plastic used for packaging. While multilayered packaging is used for chips, snacks and biscuits, tetra-packaging is used for various beverages. The decisions were taken by Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam.
