Maharashtra: Over 13,500 infant deaths recorded in 11 months
A total of 13,541 children died between Apr'17 and Feb'18 in Maharashtra due to a variety of health-related reasons, including poor weight, pneumonia, and respiratory issues. Maharashtra Health Minister Deepak Sawant said 65% of the deaths were reported within 28 days of the children's birth, while 21% of them died within 28 days to one year after their birth.
Sawant lists measures taken by govt to reduce mortality rate
Pneumonia and germ infections claimed 7% of the lives, while respiratory-related issues accounted for the deaths of 14% of the infants, Swant said. 22% lost their lives due to poor weight, the state's Health Minister added. He listed measures taken by the government to reduce child mortality rate and mentioned the schemes related to protection of mothers, kids, and vaccinations.
483 newborns died within 24 hours of birth in Mumbai
"According to the Health Management Information System, 3,778 newborns died within 24 hours (of their birth) in 2017-18 in the state. In Mumbai, 483 children died (in the same span)," said Sawant.
