Maha Kumbh 2025: Record-breaking 60 crore devotees expected by Shivratri
What's the story
The ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj is expected to shatter all previous records with an estimated 60 crore devotees expected to attend by February 26. The date marks the last "snan" (holy bath) on Maha Shivratri.
The event has already witnessed over 55 crore pilgrims taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, exceeding initial estimates by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Attendance surge
Maha Kumbh turnout surpasses initial predictions
The current turnout at the Maha Kumbh accounts for nearly half of India's "Sanatan" followers and has already surpassed CM Adityanath's initial estimate.
He had predicted around 45 crore devotees would attend, but that number was crossed by February 11. By February 14, the number of attendees had crossed 50 crore.
The highest single-day turnout was recorded on "Mauni Amavasya" with nearly eight crore devotees taking the holy dip.
Economic boost
Maha Kumbh's economic impact on Uttar Pradesh
Not only is the Maha Kumbh a prominent religious event, but it is also a huge economic booster for Uttar Pradesh.
CM Adityanath said the event would contribute over ₹3 lakh crore to the state's economy.
He attributed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership to lifting over eight crore people out of poverty in Uttar Pradesh in the last eight years and putting India on course to become a five trillion dollar economy by 2027.
