    Madurai: Criminals gunned down in encounter; SP denies "fake-encounter" charge

    A day after two history-sheeters were shot dead in an "encounter" in Tamil Nadu's Madurai, a top police official rejected the charge that they were killed after being arrested.

    Madurai District Superintendent of Police, P Manivannan, denied media reports that the rowdies were arrested in Alanganallur before they were killed in an encounter at Sikandar Chavadi area, where they resided.

    Relatives claim the history sheeters were killed after arrest

    In the reports, the relatives of the two deceased history-sheeters alleged it was a fake encounter and that the two were killed after the arrest.

    However, detailing the encounter, the top official, Manivannan, said it took place after the two rowdies, Muthu Irulandi alias Manthiri and 'Sakuni' Karthick tried to attack the police team, which had gone to arrest them following a tip-off.

    One of the rowdies opened fire at cops: SP

    Manivannan claimed despite warnings issued by the team, one of the rowdies who carried a country-made pistol tried to open fire at them following which the both were shot dead in self-defense.

    The deceased were wanted in 20 cases including murder and dacoity in several southern districts.

    An encounter report has been sent to the National Human Rights Commission and State Human Rights Commission.
