Here's what you will need to get/update Aadhaar card
With so many government welfare-schemes linked with Aadhaar, it is one of the most important documents you will ever hold. Also, a vital proof of identity, it can come handy anywhere and anytime. However, users often get confused about the documents needed to apply for, or update Aadhaar card. Here's the list of documents that can be used to get/update Aadhaar card.
List of documents accepted as Proof of address
There are basically two types of documents needed for Aadhaar application/update- Proof of address, and Proof of identity. Documents accepted as valid proofs of address are Bank statement, Post office account statement, Ration card, Voter ID, Driving license, Government Photo ID cards, ID issued by PSUs, and utility bills (water bill, gas bill, electricity bill etc.) not older than 3 months, property-tax receipt etc.
Documents accepted as Proof of Identity
Passport, PAN, Ration/PDS Photo Card, Voter ID, Driving License, Government Photo ID Cards/Service photo identity card are acceptable as Proofs of identity. Other proofs accepted by UIDAI are NREGS Job card, Arms license, Photo Bank Credit card/ATM, Pensioner Photo card, Freedom Fighter Photo card, Kissan Photo Passbook, Disability ID Card/handicapped medical certificate issued by the respective State/UT Governments/Administrations, among others.
Clearing the air around Aadhaar status
Post the September 26, 2018 SC verdict relating to authentication of Aadhaar, there has been much confusion with respect to services where Aadhaar is necessary and where not. Aadhaar is no longer mandatory for services such as bank account, telecom services, and school admissions/entrance tests. However, it is still necessary for getting a PAN, filing I-T returns, and availing government welfare schemes.
