Ahead of panchayat polls, 960 liquor cartons seized in Ballia
Liquor worth around Rs. 40 lakh allegedly meant to be distributed ahead of the panchayat polls in Ballia District of Uttar Pradesh and for smuggling into neighboring Bihar has been seized from the city. "During a drive to check the illegal sale of alcohol, 960 cartons of liquor worth over Rs. 40 lakh were recovered on Wednesday," Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada said.
Cartons were seized from different places
According to the media portal Live Hindustan, the police has filed an FIR against three people. During a drive on Tuesday, the police followed a suspicious vehicle near Jigni Railway Crossing and found around 230 cartons of illegal liquor. Meanwhile, they found 730 cartons near a brick kilning plant in the Piyaria village in a container and a pick-up truck.
Police had recovered 1,900 cartons last month
Tada further informed that the police has been running a SPecial drive in which a reward of Rs. 1,000 is given to a person if over 100 cartons of liquor are recovered based on his/her tip-off. "Last month, the police had recovered 1,900 cartons of liquor worth over Rs. 1 crore," the SP said.
Polls will be held for four positions in each district
Notably, UP Panchayat Polls are due to be held against the backdrop of the farmer's protest, as the Yogi Adityanath Government completes four years in power. Though poll dates have not been released by the State Election Commission, the polls will be held for the positions of Gram Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Member, and Area and District Panchayat member, in each district.
