Fodder Scam: Supreme Court denies bail to Lalu Prasad Yadav
The Supreme Court has rejected RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav's bail plea in the multi-crore fodder scam cases on Wednesday. A bench led by CJI Ranjan Gogoi said that it is not inclined to grant bail to the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader. "We don't think we will release you on bail," the SC told Yadav, dismissing his bail petition. Here's more.
Yadav serving jail term in connection with fodder scam cases
Lalu Prasad Yadav is currently serving jail term after being convicted in the fodder scam cases. The CJI-led SC bench has also rejected the RJD supremo's arguments that he has already served 24 months in jail. The bench said that the 24-month jail term he has served was nothing compared to the 14-year sentence he was awarded.
CBI opposed Yadav's bail plea in the apex court
This comes only a day after the CBI vehemently opposed Yadav's bail plea in the SC. The agency said that the "ailing" RJD leader has now claimed to be "fully fit" in order to indulge in political activities in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
This is a case of conspiracy, says Sibal representing Yadav
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who was appearing for Yadav, said, "There is no demand and recovery...this is a case of conspiracy." He said the only major offense under which the RJD chief was convicted was a conspiracy. To this, the SC bench said that the high court would decide merits of the case, adding, "At present, we are only hearing the bail appeal."
What could be the danger if bail's granted, asks Sibal
Kapil Sibal asked the bench "what could be the danger" if Yadav was granted bail. To this, the SC replied, "There is no danger, except you (Yadav) are convicted. We don't think we can grant bail. Petition dismissed."
