Kolkata doctor's rape-murder: CBI rules out gang-rape; Roy lone suspect
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reportedly dismissed the possibility of a gang-rape in the brutal murder and sexual assault case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The agency has identified Sanjay Roy as the sole suspect, according to NDTV. Unnamed sources told the channel that all available evidence points to Roy's involvement, adding that the investigation is nearing its conclusion and charges are expected to be filed soon.
CBI under pressure for slow progress in investigation
The report was allegedly released amid mounting pressure on the CBI, which took over the case from Kolkata Police, for its slow progress. "They don't want justice. They want delay. It has been 16 days, where is justice?" Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier said. State minister Bratya Basu also criticized the lack of a progress report from the CBI, stating that Kolkata Police provided more regular updates on the case.
CBI's investigation process and findings
The CBI has reportedly sent a medical report containing the accused's DNA to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi for examination. The agency will finalize their report once they receive these results. So far, the CBI has recorded over 100 statements and conducted 10 polygraph tests in this case. The CBI has also brought charges of financial irregularities against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who was the principal at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital when the incident occurred.
Financial irregularities and public outrage surrounding the case
Three arrests have been made in this financial fraud case, but a conclusive arrest is yet to be made in the rape and murder case. The three arrested are Suman Hazara and Biplav Singha, hospital vendors, and Afsar Ali, who was part of additional security of Ghosh. The CBI is scheduled to file a status report with the Calcutta High Court on September 17.
