Kolkata: Brain dead person donates organs, second-donation within 6 days
Within a span of six days, Kolkata today witnessed another organ donation from a 59-year-old brain dead person, a Health Department official said. The donor, a resident of Chitpur area, was declared brain dead last evening and with the permission of state Nodal Office for organ transplantation, transplant specialists of the Kolkata's Apollo Gleneagles Hospital retrieved one kidney and conducted the transplant. Recipient was suffering from chronic kidney disease
The recipient, who is a 58-year-old resident of the Kolkata's Tangra area, was suffering from chronic kidney disease and on the transplant list. The transplantation was successfully performed, a doctor said, adding that the operation was uneventful and the patient was under observation.
Liver, second kidney of donor were harvested by govt-run hospital
Meanwhile, the liver and the second kidney of the donor were harvested by the government-run SSKM Hospital doctors late last night at the private hospital, the official said. Both the organs were rushed to the SSKM Hospital from the private hospital through a green corridor enabled by the Kolkata Police and those were transplanted on two patients, the official added.
Kidneys, liver of another donor were transplanted on three patients
One Mallika Majumder, hailed from Siliguri, was declared brain-dead by the SSKM Hospital on August 17. Her two kidneys and liver were transplanted on three different patients.
