Kolkata triple-murder case solved; cops say 2 brothers behind it
What's the story
Two brothers, Pranay and Prasun Dey, have been accused of murdering their wives and a teenage girl by the Kolkata Police.
The bodies of the victims were discovered from their Tangra residence on February 19.
Police Commissioner Manoj Verma confirmed no outsiders were involved in this crime. He said, "We are pretty sure that the two brothers are behind the crime and there is no involvement of any outsider."
Crime motive
Financial troubles suspected as motive behind murders
The police suspect financial troubles over their leather goods business could have pushed the brothers to commit the heinous acts.
Despite living a lavish life, the family was apparently in huge debt.
On the day of the murders, both brothers and Pranay's son were injured in a car accident on Eastern Metropolitan bypass.
They first told police they had entered into a suicide pact and that they had eaten porridge mixed with sleeping pills.
Autopsy findings
Autopsies reveal true cause of death, contradicting initial claims
However, autopsies of the victims contradicted the brothers' initial claims of a suicide pact.
The reports revealed that both women had slit wrists and throat injuries while they were still alive.
Prasun's daughter was found to have died from poisoning.
These findings led police to suspect foul play and further investigate the brothers' involvement in the crime.
Witness account
Surviving son points to uncles as perpetrators
Reportedly, Pranay's son, who survived the car crash, told police his uncle was behind the murders.
Commissioner Verma said while the brothers have confessed to their involvement in the crime, expert opinions are needed to verify and confirm their admissions.
He added that at this stage of investigation, it is not clear what specific roles each brother played in these tragic events.
Legal proceedings
Brothers hospitalized, legal consequences await
The Dey brothers are currently undergoing treatment at NRS Medical College and Hospital for their injuries from the car crash. They will be arrested for the alleged triple murder after being discharged.
Authorities are also consulting legal experts on custody of Pranay's son, who is recovering at a private hospital after surviving the same car accident that injured his father and uncle.
