Kolkata rape-murder: Police station near RG Kar gets new officer-in-charge
The Tala Police Station in Kolkata has a new Officer-in-Charge (O/C), Malay Kumar Dutta. This change comes after the arrest of former O/C Abhijit Mondal in connection with the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. The appointment was made official by an order from the Commissioner of Kolkata Police on Thursday.
Former O/C, medical college principal transferred to jail
On Wednesday, both Mondal and Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, were transferred to Presidency Jail from Sealdah Court. They were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for their alleged involvement in the rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College. The CBI has accused them of creating false records related to this case at Tala police station.
Allegations of evidence tampering
The CBI has alleged that some records pertaining to the rape and murder case were "falsely created" and "altered" at Tala police station. CCTV footage from the police station has been seized for further examination by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). In addition to this, Ghosh is also under investigation for financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College following a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court.
Former O/C's suspension and ongoing investigations
Mondal was suspended by the Kolkata Police on September 18 following his arrest by the CBI on September 14. He was later produced before Sealdah Court along with Ghosh. The special court has extended their judicial custody until September 30. The prime suspect in the rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy, is also under investigation for potential criminal conspiracy with Ghosh and Mondal.
