Kolkata rape-murder: AIIMS doctors end 11-day strike after SC's appeal
The Resident Doctors's Association (RDA) of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, has called off its 11-day strike. The decision comes after the Supreme Court's suo moto cognizance in the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. "Doctors must stop the protest...Our hearts go out to those who visit government hospitals with ailments," Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said during the hearing.
RDA's statement on ending the strike
The RDA issued a statement expressing gratitude toward the Supreme Court for acknowledging the RG Kar incident and addressing healthcare workers' safety concerns. The association said, "In the interest of the nation and spirit of public service, RDA, AIIMS, New Delhi has decided to call off 11-day strike." They added that this decision was made in response to "the appeal and direction of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India."
RDA urges authorities to follow SC's directives
The RDA has urged authorities to strictly comply with the Supreme Court's directives. They also appreciated the court's instruction that no punitive action should be taken against protesting doctors. "Our primary responsibility - 'patient care' - remains our utmost priority, and we are dedicated to upholding it," the association stated in its release.
RDA to continue 'symbolic protest' until justice is served
Despite calling off the strike, the RDA has declared that it will continue its "struggle" through a "symbolic protest" after duty hours. This decision stands until "justice is served." Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently investigating the case under the Calcutta High Court's directions. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, who is a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, remains under scrutiny.
