Kolkata medical college superintendent removed after trainee doctor's murder
The West Bengal Health Department has removed Dr. Sanjay Vasishta, the superintendent of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, following the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman trainee doctor on the hospital premises. The incident occurred two days ago and has led to widespread protests across the state. The dean of the hospital, Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, has been appointed as Vasishta's successor.
Victim found with injuries in hospital seminar hall
The victim, a second-year postgraduate student, was discovered in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College with multiple injuries. A subsequent autopsy confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted before being killed. The accused, Sanjay Roy, was arrested on Saturday and remanded to 14-day police custody. According to News18, Roy had easy access to several departments of the hospital as he was a civic volunteer on the police welfare board.
Doctors protest, demand improved security on campus
The brutal crime has triggered protests among medical students and doctors at the college, who are demanding accountability from those responsible. They have accused the hospital administration of ignoring their repeated requests for enhanced security measures on campus. The protesters have claimed that the "entire security agency of RG Kar Medical College is flawed" and are calling for stringent action in response to this incident.
IMA issues 48-hour ultimatum; demands speedy investigation
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the authorities on Saturday, demanding a swift investigation and threatening nationwide protests if the culprits are not apprehended within this timeframe. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee promised swift justice in the case and has directed that it be tried in a fast-track court. She has also stated that her government would not object to a CBI investigation if the students or the victim's family request it.
